A Limited-Edition Pikachu Promo Aims to Curb the Influence On Resellers

Marking the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique partnership is underway. The Pokémon Company alongside London's Natural History Museum will launch a temporary store stocked with special merchandise. Enthusiasts will find products like plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all inspired by the institution's theme. For collectors, however, is a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a free bonus for the pop-up. This shop will operate both on-site at the museum to online from January 26 to April 19.

Pokécology Behind the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a much-awaited tome filled with beautiful illustrations depicting creatures in their natural habitats. It's essentially like the kind of research an in-world scientist could produce once trainers submit their data, alternatively a naturalist's journal could have sketched if the Galapagos teemed with Pidgeys rather than finches. A key appeal stems from the book's scholarly treatment, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate subject for study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.

What Makes This Promo Card Different

It is common to issue special edition cards for big events and brand collaborations. A lot of these collector items typically highlight the famous mouse Pokémon that acts as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this latest museum card is its distinctly bigger size. While precise specs were not publicly disclosed, its distribution is guaranteed to be strictly limited, with customers able to get only a single card per purchase.

Limiting Speculator Interest

Per an official announcement, a portion of the pop-up items may also be available outside the institution itself. But, a wider release will only be specific stores in the UK. Importantly, collectors cannot purchase the card through the online Pokémon Center. While reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they will have trouble stockpiling large numbers on this occasion. If you're unable to attend, consider the upcoming Pokémon Fossil exhibit coming to Chicago in the coming months.

"All profits from purchases from the museum store and its web shop, including Pokémon products, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. This includes the efforts of hundreds of researchers dedicated to scientific inquiry and finding answers to the global ecological crisis," the statement notes.
