Anthony Barry Shares His Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

A decade ago, Anthony Barry featured in League Two. Now, he's dedicated on helping the head coach secure World Cup glory next summer. His journey from player to coach commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his calling.

Rapid Rise

The coach's journey is incredible. Commencing with his first major job, he built a reputation through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His club career led him to top European clubs, and he held coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the peak in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a methodical process enabling us to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours all the time, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. The approach feature player analysis, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the England collective and avoids language such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry notes. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and the head coach as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and that's our focus long hours toward. We must not only to stay ahead of changes but to surpass them and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We must implement a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from thought to data to know-how to performance.

“To create a system enabling productivity during the limited time, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, observing them live, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. England have guaranteed their place at the finals after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy should represent everything that is good about the Premier League,” he comments. “The fitness, the adaptability, the physicality, the integrity. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.

“To make it light, we have to give them a system that lets them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data these days. They know how to set up – structured defenses. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst to get better knows no bounds. During his education for the top coaching badge, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, especially as his class featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations available to him to hone his presentations. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates during an exercise.

He earned his license with top honors, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those impressed and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom at Chelsea. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that Chelsea removed most of his staff while keeping Barry.

The next manager at Stamford Bridge took over, within months, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he brought Barry over from Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
